What is the difference between Diabetes Type 1 and Type 2?

Type 1 generally occurs as a child , most develop this type of diabetes before the age of 20. Type 1 people cannot produce insulin and they must take insulin on a regular basis.

Type 2 people have one out of two problems
1. They cannot produce adequate amounts of insulin
2. They do not utilize the insulin they have well.

What is insulin?
Insulin is a hormone produced in the the body by the pancreas. This is done inside the pancreas by the beta cells within the Islets of Langerhans.

What does does blood sugar have to do with diabetes?

Blood sugar is checked by diabetic persons to make sure their levels (glucose levels) are not too high or too low.
Glucose is a blood sugar used by the body to feed cells. Food enters the blood stream in the form of glucose where it is utilized by the cells for growth and energy. Without insulin the cells can not grow, repair themselves or provide the body with energy.

Type 1 Diabetes- produce no insulin

Type 2 Diabetes- produce but not enough insulin or they make sufficient insulin but do not utilize the insulin well enough to feed the cells.
